Cobras too strong for Victorian Lions

Victorian Lions U16  recorded their first lost game in the MFL against the Cobras this competition. A severely understrength Lions team lined up against the Cobras on 27th February. Five U14 players were brought in to complete this weeks game. Gianni for the Lions opened the scoring after a corner conceded by the Cobras. The score was levelled from a free kick after a backpass to the Lions goal keeper. Just before half time the Cobras extended their lead to 2-1. In the second half the Lions played better. Each team scored once in the seond half which brought the final score to 3-2.

The second game for the day was unfortunately not completed as Oz Futsal was not able to field a team in time due to the players having other football commitments.

The scheduled game for the Victorian Lions U14 was postponed till a later date in March.

After the holiday break both Victorian Lions Futsal teams continued their campaign in the Melbourne Futsal League on Saturday 13th February.

The U16 team played against AFG Caroline Springs. Both teams played an attacking game which resulted in many goals. The Lions were first to score and with some very quick and clever combination play were 7-2 ahead at half time. The direct kick off for the second half by the Lions ended unfortunately against the goal post. The rate at which goals were scored was high and the final score was 14-6 in favour of the Lions.

The Victorian Lions Futsal U14 team arrived at their game against AGF Strathmore at full strength. Initially both teams had to get the feel for the game but the Connor opened the scoring for the Lions. Jack and Gianni scored one goal each which resulted in a 3-0 advantage for the Lions at half time. Despite the fact that organization within the Lions team was not yet back to the level from before the holiday break they managed to score three more goals. The final score of 6-0 kept the Lions on top of their competition.

Victorian Lions Futsal top of the League

This weekend was successful for both Victorian Lions Futsal teams in the Melbourne Futsal League. The U14 team played AFG Caroline Springs 1 and achieved a hard fought win. In particular the performance of the Lions goal keeper Carlo was outstanding. 4 -2 was the final score.

The U16 team played two matches on Saturday afternoon. The first game against Melbourne Reds ended in a 4 all draw. In the second game the Lions managed to win against Cobras. During the first half the Lions scored 4 times and the Cobras twice. The Lions were a bit unlucky with hitting the post twice in the first half. In the second half the Lions extended the score to 9-2 before the Cobras managed three consecutive goals. The final score was 9-5.

These scores put both Victorian Lions Futsal teams on top of their league before going into the Christmas break. The Victorian Lions Futsal U16 play their next game on 6th February 2010. The Lions U14 team play their next game against AFG Caroline Springs 2 also on 6th February 2010.

Victorian Lions Futsal U16s Runners Up in Grand Final

The Victorian Lions U16s team lined up against the Jets in the Ashburton Futsal League Div 1 Grand Final. The Lions created a very quick chance immediately after kick off but Christian could not convert this into an advantage on the score board. The Jets created an opportunity from set play and opened the score already after two minutes of play. Again after 6 minutes the Jets managed to score from a clever free kick.  The Victorian Lions were to score next after a well executed side kick between Christian and Josh. A great save by Matt stopped the Jets extending their lead. In the eleventh minute the Jets did manage to increase their advantage to 3-1. The Victorian Lions created some very good chances but were not able to put the ball in the net. Kojo was unlucky not to score from a free kick. The Jets defended very well and although the Victorian Lions had most possession of the ball the Jets added to the goal difference after a kick in from the side which surprised the defense and the goal keeper. Jordan replaced Matt in goal to add a fifth player but the Jets' defence was too good. At half time the Jets were well in front with 4-1. In the second half Jordan continued as goal keeper. The teams were very equal in strength. The Victorian Lions had shots on goal from Kojo and Jordan but no goals were scored. After a misunderstanding in the Victorian Lions defense the Jets extended their lead to 5-1. Some great defending from Richard stopped the Jets extending their lead further. With three minutes remaining Josh finished a well built attack with a well placed shot: 5-2. Also in the second half the Victorian Lions had most of the possession. The tactics of the Jets of defending well and playing the counter paid off for them. The Victorian Lions U16s have played a very good competition and to end as runners up is an illustration that they are continuing to develop well as a team.

Victorian Lions Futsal U16s in Grand Final

The semi final in the Ashburton Futsal League Div 1 between Dudley Boyz and Victorian Lions Futsal U16 was played at Ashburton on Wednesday 2nd December. The Victorian Lions started very convincing with good combinations. This resulted in a goal by Chris in the 4th minute after a very well executed combination. Two minutes later Jordan put the second goal in the net for the Lions after a well practiced kick-in from the side. After these early goals the Lions relaxed a bit which was seen by the Dudley Boyz as an opportunity and they scored two goals in quick succession to level the score. The Dudley Boyz kept the pressure on but luckily for the Lions they missed an opportunity in front of an empty goal in the 13th minute. The Lions were similarly unlucky with a suburb header by Christian which hit the post. The teams were balanced at 2 -all at half time.  Wael, the Vic Lions coach must have made some inspirational comments at half time because after the restart the Lions had found their composure again. A goal in the 3rd minute from Josh put the Lions ahead again and Alex extended the score further from set play. After a very quick throw from Matt, the Lions goal keeper, Friso score a fantastic goal to put the Lions ahead 5-2. The Dudley Boyz were not giving up and threw everything they had into their game. The pressure was too much for the Lions as they had to concede two goals in one minute. The last five minutes of the game were nerve wrecking for the Lions supporters. No further goals were scored and the Lions did win the game 5-4. The Victorian Lions players have developed their game very well during this competition and deserve to play in the Grand Final on Wednesday 9th December. In the Final the Lions will meet the Jets who won their semi final against Joga Bonito 4-2. Although the Lions won their previous match against the Jets with 5-3 this will be no walk-over. The Jets are experienced and will go full out to stop the Lions from winning the title.

Victorian Lions Futsal U16s reach Semi Finals.

In the Ashburton Futsal League Divsion 1 Victorian Lions Futsal U16 have reached the semi finals with a convincing win over Boroondara Old Boys. The first encounter between these two teams resulted in a 5-all draw. This quarter final match was clearly dominated by the Victorian Lions. The Lions were quicker around the court and were able to create more opportunities.

In the semi final which will be played on Wednesday 2nd December at Ashburton Pool & Recreation Centre, the Victorian Lions will meet Dudley Boyz. The first match between these teams ended in a win for Dudley Boyz. It promises to be a challenging game but with the improvements made throughout the competition and a full squad available the Victorian Lions are confident going into this semi final.

Another win for Victorian Lions Futsal U14s.

The futsal game in the U14 Melbourne Futsal League between Victorian Lions Futsal and EFA Eagles was always going to be a good game. The spectators were not being disappointed. Both teams engaged in a quick game with good futsal being played at both sides. The Eagles opened the scoring after 6 minutes. The Lions however managed to balance the score 1 minute later. The Lions had a great scoring opportunity after 10 minutes of play but the Eagles goalkeeper managed to keep the ball out of the net with some great skills. Before half time the Lions extended their lead and went into the break one goal ahead. After the break the Eagles put together some very good combination play and within the first 5 minutes in the second half took over the lead with two goals in quick succession. Only after 15 minutes Connor equalled the score for the Lions. With the score being level the pressure was building as both teams tried to secure a win in the last 5 minutes of the game. The Lions scored with two minutes to go. In the last minutes of the game the Eagles threw everything into their game but were not able to get an advantage. At the final whistle the Lions were very happy for the game to be over and having registered the win. The game was played at fast pace and some good play was presented by both teams. The Lions still will need to continue with their skill and tactical development under the coaching of Lee as there will be more challenging games to follow in this MFL competition.

Victorian Lions Futsal kick off in the MFL

On Saturday 14th November the teams of Victorian Lions Futsal have started their campaign in the Melbourne Futsal League 2009/2010. The U14 team kicked off at 2:00 pm against Cobras 2 while the U16 team started at 4:00 pm against Oz Boys at the Bundoora Netball Centre.

U14

The Cobras 2 team immediately displayed a level of competence in Futsal which reflected the participation in Futsal for some time. The Victorian Lions took some time to adjust and find their game rhythm. The teams were equal and both worked hard to keep possession. Neither the Cobras nor the Lions would concede a goal through tough defense and good goal keeping. The whistle at half time came as a relief for most players as the high temperature was wearing the players out quickly. During the second half play was very competitive; Lions managed to score first in this match where both teams were very evenly matched. Towards the half way mark in the second half Victorian Lions increased the pace of the game, with some excellent combination play. The score was extended in favour of the Lions before the Cobras had a chance to score. Victorian Lions lost possession a few time through not sticking to the rules correctly. The referees are very strict and apply the rules consistently. The goal keepers on both sides put in very solid performances through out the second half. A quickly executed combination between Connor and Jack resulted in another goal for Victorian Lions.

U16

Unfortunately Matt the regular U16 goal keeper was not able to attend this match, therefore Alex took the honours as goal keeper and 5th player. He put in a solid performance with some excellent saves. His participation in the game as 5th player worked well and half way through the second half it looked like he was moving up the court in an effort to score another goal. Throughout the first half the combinations and rotations of the Victorian Lions managed to confuse their opponents. Excellent play and very quick off-the-ball movement from Richard resulted in a spectacular shot on goal where he kicked the ball while flying in mid air. The goal keeper had no chance. At the half way mark of the game the score board reflected the solid performance by Victorian Lions. In the second half the teams were more evenly matched and only one goal for the Lions, a sneaky backwards flick from Josh, was the result.

Victorian Lions Futsal U14 continue the preparation for MFL

The U14 Futsal team of Victorian Lions Futsal registered another win on Friday evening in the Box Hill Futsal Competition against The Brutes. This was the second game in the competition. Unfortunately goal keeper Carlo could not attend so Manny and Madoc defended the goal for one half each. With quick combination play Victorian Lions managed to find the back of the net in quick succession. In the second half Victorian Lions continued their good play although the heat was taking toll; the pace of the game slowed down as all players were tiring quickly. At occasions Victorian Lions retained possession of the ball for extended periods. This must have pleased coaches Friso and Christian as the preparation for the Melbourne Futsal League is now completed.

The U14 Futsal team of Victorian Lions Futsal registered a convincing 10-1 win on Friday evening in the Box Hill Futsal Competition against Blacky Boys This was the first game in the competition and the team managed to put some very good play on the court. Victorian Lions started with some good play with well executed combinations which resulted in a very quick 2-0 lead. Just before half time Blacky Boys managed a very quick counter attack which beat the defence and goal keeper Carlo ; 4-1 at half time.

In the second half Victorian Lions continued their good play. Attacks were build way back in their own half with combinations which resulted in 6 more goals. Some good defence and quick reactions of Blacky Boys' goal keeper kept the result at 10-1 for Victorian Lions.

2009 State Club Futsal Championships

The under 15/16 Boys Final was a classic encounter, with the Strikers sealing a 5-4 victory against the Victorian Lions.

It’s been a successful last couple of weeks for St Albans Strikers’ coach Rob Lakovski, after also leading St Albans Secondary College to two titles in the State School Futsal Championships late last month.

Cobras Futsal Club gave up a strong fight to finish the highest placed under 15 Boys team in the combined under 15 and under 16 age category.

Overall it was a very successful competition for the St Albans Strikers, after closely losing three semi finals and losing out 6-2 in the under 14 Boys Grand Final to an impressive Benchwarmers side.

In the under 13 Boys category, South Melbourne JFC were too strong for the Melbourne Futsal League Champions, Australian Futsal Group, with a 4-1 win.

Sandringham WSC bounced back after several early injuries to make the under 12 Boys final, but couldn’t overcome an energetic Australian BSA team who ran out 10-3 winners.

A strong crowd on the Show Court witnessed the Melbourne Reds team clinch the under 11 Boys crown with a 5-2 win over Monash City JFC.

FFV Business Development Manager, Chris Ryan, was delighted to see involvement from regional Victorian clubs.

“To see strong teams from Woodend and Warrnambool in the younger age categories and participating from Camperdown is really encouraging,” Mr Ryan said.

“Hopefully, events like this can be the catalyst for Futsal development in regions dominated by other sports.”
